One of the most important things you can do when first establishing your small business venture is to find others who can be instrumental in helping you publicize your new product or service. Industry authorities are well respected members of the community and can include anyone from influential bloggers, magazine publishers, TV producers, event planners and more. Here are a few thoughts to get you headed in the right direction in locating some of your industry’s top authorities.

Start by identifying your competition and studying their activity on social media networks. Scan Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Linkedin and any other social media networks they post to and take special note of who your competition follows. The sources they follow are most likely your industry authorities.

Investigate websites and forums your competition is currently engaging with. And start interacting with those groups. Here are a few great sources for connecting with others in your industry, for discovering your competition and locating influencers:

Find local industry related meet-ups that have an active membership base. Attend the meetings and start making contacts. Always have a business card on hand and exchange it for a card in return. These contacts will eventually lead you to additional industry authorities.

Identify similar, but different, businesses from your business and repeat steps 1-3.
